Is poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) a polymer electrolyte?

Poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) is not typically considered a polymer electrolyte in the conventional sense, although it has ionic character due to the quaternary ammonium groups along its backbone.

A polymer electrolyte usually refers to a polymer material that can conduct ions, enabling it to be used in battery electrolytes, fuel cells, or as ion-conducting membranes in electrochemical devices. These materials typically have mobile cations and anions within the polymer matrix.

PDADMAC is a water-soluble cationic polymer often used as a flocculant, antistatic agent, and for surface modification because of its positive charge. In aqueous solutions, it dissociates to some extent, releasing counterions (e.g., chloride ions), but it does not form a continuous ionic pathway like solid-state polymer electrolytes such as poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) complexes with lithium salts.

So, while PDADMAC does contribute to ion transport when dissolved in water, it is not generally categorized as a polymer electrolyte in the context of solid-state ion-conducting materials. However, if it's used in certain applications where ionic conductivity is required in a solution phase, one could argue that it contributes to ionic conduction.
