How to make PolyDADMAC?

Synthesis. The monomer DADMAC is formed by reacting two equivalents of allyl chloride with dimethylamine. PolyDADMAC is then synthesized by radical polymerization of DADMAC with an organic peroxide used as a catalyst. Two polymeric structures are possible when polymerizing DADMAC: N-substituted piperidine structure or N-substituted pyrrolidine structure. The pyrrolidine structure is favored.

Why is polyelectrolyte used in water treatment?

Introduction. The main applications of organic polyelectrolytes in potable water production are in coagulation and flocculation, and in the dewatering of treatment plant sludges. ... Polymers have been utilised in coagulation/flocculation processes for water purification for at least four decades (Kawamura, 1976).

What is cationic coagulant?

Organic coagulants are generally used for solid & liquid separation and sludge generation. Organic formulations are based on the following chemistries:

The most widely used organic coagulants, which are cationic in nature and function by charge neutralization alone. Cationic coagulants neutralise the negative charge of colloids and form a spongy mass called microflocs.

Melamine Formaldehydes and Tannins – These coagulate the colloidal material in the water, and absorb organic materials such as oil and grease.

The main advantages of organic coagulants include; lower dosage, lower volume of sludge produced and no effect on the pH.

What is flocculant for?

Used in a wide range of industries and applications, flocculants help to remove suspended solids from wastewater by aggregating contaminants into flakes or “flocs” that float to the surface of the water or settle at the bottom. They can also be used for lime softening, sludge thickening, and solids dehydration.

What is polyacrylamide used for?

Polyacrylamides are water-soluble synthetic linear polymers made of acrylamide or the combination of acrylamide and acrylic acid. Polyacrylamide finds applications in pulp and paper production, agriculture, food processing, mining, and as a flocculant in wastewater treatment.

Is ammonia a chloride?

Ammonium chloride (NH4Cl), also called sal ammoniac, the salt of ammonia and hydrogen chloride. ... Ammonium chloride is a colourless crystalline substance. It is highly soluble in water, readily forming a slightly acidic solution.
