In recent years, polyelectrolytes have become the preference for removing suspended solids in many industrial wastewater facilities. Conventionally, a single polyelectrolyte was used for this treatment, but recently several studies on hybrid polyelectrolytes systems have looked at improving the flocculation of suspended particles in wastewaters.


Some experters reported that polystyrene sulfonate and cationic polyacrylamide showed limited flocculation potential while being used alone, but achieved good flocculation when incorporated together. They proposed that hybrid cationic polyelectrolytes conditioning (one with high molecular weight and the other with low molecular weight) are more effective than single polyelectrolytes. The advantages of the dual polyelectrolyte systems are either from the dosage of polyelectrolytes being decreased or better flocculation being achieved. 

However, the mechanisms of hybrid polyelectrolyte conditioning remain unclear.


Both cationic polyDADMAC and polyacrylamide were utilized for pulp and paper mill wastewater conditioning. PolyDADMAC was selected due to their high charge density meanwhile PAM was high molecular weight. The objective was to investigate the synergistic effect of polyDADMAC and polyacrylamide (PAM) on the flocculation enhancement of pulp and paper mill wastewater.
