PolyDADMAC in the Pulp and Paper Industry: A Versatile Water Treatment and Process Aid


PolyDiallylDimethylAmmonium Chloride, commonly abbreviated as PolyDADMAC, is a high-performance cationic polymer that has found extensive applications within the pulp and paper industry due to its exceptional water treatment capabilities and process-enhancing properties. This quaternary ammonium compound, available in liquid, powder, or bead form, is renowned for its flocculation efficiency and anionic trash control, which significantly impacts the overall sustainability and economics of paper manufacturing processes.


In the pulp and paper sector, wastewater management is a critical concern, with substantial volumes of effluent generated from pulping, bleaching, and papermaking operations. 2. Anionic Trash Control: The presence of anionic contaminants such as pitch and stickies can disrupt the papermaking process, causing deposits on machinery and defects in the final product. PolyDADMAC-based formulations are effective in controlling these substances, preventing them from interfering with paper formation and machine runnability.


3. Fiber Strengthening and Reinforcement: In some instances, PolyDADMAC can contribute to fiber strengthening, leading to improved paper strength properties like tear resistance, tensile strength, and burst index, especially when used in combination with other strengthening agents in high-yield pulp (HYP) furnishes, as evidenced by research conducted at Tianjin University of Science and Technology under the guidance of Professor Hongbin Liu.


4. Effluent Treatment: At the end of the process chain, PolyDADMAC continues to demonstrate its efficacy in clarifying effluents before they are discharged or recycled back into the system. It reduces the Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) in wastewater, ensuring sustainable practices in accordance with stringent environmental regulations.
