Is polyaluminium chloride corrosive?

Polyaluminium chloride (PAC) can exhibit varying degrees of corrosiveness depending on its composition, concentration, and the specific environment in which it is used. At high concentrations and acidic pH levels, PAC solutions can be corrosive to certain materials, particularly metals like iron and steel. The presence of free hydrochloric acid (HCl) from the manufacturing process can contribute to its corrosive properties.

However, when properly dosed and used in water treatment applications, PAC is often formulated or adjusted to minimize its corrosive effects. For example, the use of basic PAC (with a higher pH and lower chloride content) can help reduce corrosion potential in water distribution systems.

To mitigate corrosion risks, it's important to monitor the pH of the treated water, control the dosage of PAC, and consider corrosion inhibitors if necessary. Regular maintenance and monitoring of the treatment system and pipelines can also help manage corrosion caused by PAC or other treatment chemicals.
