PACL stands for Poly Aluminium Chloride, which is a type of inorganic polymer coagulant commonly used in water treatment processes. The chemical formula for PACL can be represented as [Aln(OH)mCl3n-m]x, and it typically appears in colors ranging from light yellow to deep brown with a resin-like consistency.
It is manufactured by the reaction between aluminum compounds, such as aluminum hydroxide, and hydrochloric acid or other aluminum salts. Due to its high molecular weight and strong bridging action, when added to water, PACL hydrolyzes, forming aluminum hydroxide flocs. These flocs are instrumental in aggregating impurities like suspended particles, colloids, and organic substances, thereby enhancing sedimentation and facilitating the purification process in both drinking water treatment and industrial wastewater treatment.
Characterized by a density usually greater than 1.19 g/cm³, an acidic pH typically between 3.5 and 5, and a basicity (alkalinity) often reaching up to 85% or more, PACL dissolves easily in water and may also be dissolved by inorganic acids. It exhibits hygroscopic properties and can undergo crystalline changes at higher temperatures.
One of the key advantages of PACL over some organic flocculants is its versatility and effectiveness under a wide range of water conditions and temperatures, particularly in treating low-temperature, low-turbidity, and organically polluted raw waters. This versatility leads to more efficient dosing requirements, reduced costs, and compatibility with automated dosing systems. With a broad effective pH working range of approximately 5 to 9, PACL is capable of treating diverse types of water without significantly impacting the treated water's pH balance and alkalinity.
