Obtaining Polyaluminum Chloride (PAC) typically involves a chemical synthesis process that converts aluminum compounds into the desired PAC form. Here's an overview of the general method:


1. Production Process:

-  Aluminum Source:  The primary raw material used to make PAC is usually aluminum hydroxide or aluminum oxide, sometimes aluminum chloride can also be used.

-  Acid Treatment:  Aluminum hydroxide or oxide reacts with hydrochloric acid (HCl) under controlled conditions. This reaction forms aluminum chlorohydrate intermediates, which further polymerize to produce PAC.


The detailed process includes several steps:


 Step 1: Preparation of Aluminate Solution 

Aluminum hydroxide or oxide is mixed with a strong acid, most commonly hydrochloric acid, in a reactor. The reaction results in the formation of aluminum chlorhydrate and water, which produces an acidic solution.


 Step 2: Polymerization 

The reaction mixture is then heated and stirred for a certain period to allow polymerization to occur. The degree of polymerization is controlled by factors such as the ratio of aluminum to chlorine, temperature, pH, and reaction time.


 Step 3: Aging and Filtration 

After polymerization, the solution is allowed to age to improve its coagulation performance. Then it is filtered to remove any unreacted solids or impurities.


 Step 4: Concentration and Drying 

The resulting liquid PAC can be concentrated through evaporation to reach the desired concentration. Solid PAC powder is produced by further evaporating the water until dryness, followed by grinding and sieving to obtain the final product.


 2. Different Forms of PAC: 

-  Liquid PAC : Prepared directly from the reaction process, often used when quick dosing and immediate action are required in water treatment plants.

-  Powdered PAC : Produced by evaporating excess water from the liquid form and drying it, which makes it more convenient for transportation and storage.


By adjusting the manufacturing parameters, different grades of PAC can be produced, varying in color, composition, and coagulation properties, suitable for a wide range of water and wastewater treatment applications.
